A CLASSER:
1. H649 BARBARIC OBVERSE DIES . 1 Entirely retrograde ... Die O2: Entirely retrograde type 2 (and "A" missing: "KICAPOC")
Die O6: Entirely retrograde type 6 Die O7: Entirely retrograde type 7 Die O8: Retrograde lituus, date "LIL" (instead of "LIZ") on obverse (!)
.. 4 Very crude inscription ... Die O7: Very crude inscription. Die flaw under the cross of the lituus
.... 5 Crude inscription ... Die O6: Crude inscription & lituus. The letters are bigger and more rounded than usual
... Die O7: Crude inscription. Also, the final "C" is missing. In AJC/TJC, Prof. Meshorer listed this die by error as bearing "KAICY" (AJC #25a, TJC #335a)
.... Die O9: Crude inscription.
... Die O13: Crude inscription with errors
. Dies O14 to O23: Crude inscription. The following specimens are presenting 9 other barbaric obverse dies.

5.2 Date "LIZ" with retrograde "Z" The LIV, LIZ (retrograde "Z") & LIS date varieties can be very similar, but their origin are various: 1. LIV is shown on extremely rare and poorly struck specimens bearing the lituus on obverse and the wreath on reverse (only 5 specimens listed!). Like the H648 coins, those specimens were struck in 29 C.E. It can be considered as a limited (trial?) pre-coinage having been re-issued one then two years later (30 & 31 C.E.) for a much larger diffusion. 2. LIZ (with retrograde "Z") is the most common variety on Pontius Pilate's coins, probably engraved by an unskilled enough engraver(s). A bit like I am in English. 3. LIS can be considered as a "variety of the variety" LIZ (with retrograde "Z") 5.2.1 Die R1-LIS Connected to

5.2.20 Dies R23-LIS to R48-LIS Each of the following specimens has been struck by a different die
.. Note that another die bearing "LIS" and a wreath turning rightward is known on a hybrid specimen. This die is already listed in the H649 Barbaric reverse dies section. |
